Face Cloths Explained: Muslin, Cotton, Bamboo and Exfoliating Cloths

Face Cloths Explained: Muslin, Cotton, Bamboo and Exfoliating Cloths

A face cloth seems like one of the simplest things in your bathroom. But look a little closer and there can be a surprising amount of difference between them.

Some face cloths are exceptionally soft. Some have a little more texture. Muslin cloths can feel completely different depending on their weave and construction. Bamboo cotton can feel soft and smooth, while more textured cotton fabrics can provide noticeably more exfoliation.

So which face cloth should you choose?

The answer depends less on finding one “best” face cloth and more on understanding the different materials and textures available.

What is a face cloth?

A face cloth is a small reusable cloth used with water or a cleanser to wash the face and remove everyday impurities from the skin.

Unlike disposable wipes or cotton pads, face cloths can be washed and reused. They can also add a physical element to cleansing, with the fabric itself helping to lift away residue as it passes over the skin.

But not every face cloth feels the same.

The fibre, weave, thickness and construction of the fabric all affect how a cloth feels against your skin. That is why two cotton face cloths can provide very different experiences.

Muslin face cloths

Muslin face cloths are popular for cleansing because the open weave of the fabric creates a light texture against the skin.

However, “muslin” describes a type of fabric rather than one precise level of texture. A fine or layered muslin can feel relatively soft, while a more open cotton muslin can provide considerably more grip.

This makes muslin particularly versatile.

At TYGLY, for example, we use two different forms of muslin.

G2 Gentle Texture uses a two ply muslin construction to create a soft cloth with a little more texture than our softest grade.

G3 Everyday Balance uses cotton muslin to create a more noticeable texture designed for everyday cleansing.

Both are muslin face cloths, but they don't feel the same.

Cotton face cloths

Cotton is one of the most widely used fibres for face cloths, but the word “cotton” alone tells you relatively little about how a cloth will actually feel.

The construction of the fabric matters just as much.

A soft cotton fabric may provide gentle everyday cleansing, while a more defined weave can create considerably more texture and physical exfoliation.

TYGLY G4, for example, uses a heavier cotton etamine fabric to create a more defined texture than our muslin grades.

So when choosing a cotton face cloth, it is worth looking beyond the fibre itself and considering the weave and texture too.

Bamboo face cloths

Bamboo based fabrics are often chosen when softness is the priority.

Our softest face cloth, G1 The Softest Touch, uses a 70 percent bamboo and 30 percent cotton fabric. It is designed for occasions when you want the gentlest feel in the TYGLY range.

A softer cloth can be particularly useful when your skin simply feels like it needs less texture.

It is also a good reminder that choosing a face cloth does not always mean looking for more exfoliation. Sometimes the right choice is the cloth you notice least.

Exfoliating face cloths

At the other end of the spectrum are more textured face cloths.

Physical exfoliation does not necessarily require a separate scrub. The texture of the cloth itself can provide a mechanical exfoliating effect as it moves across the skin.

The amount of exfoliation depends on the fabric, its construction and, importantly, how much pressure you apply.

TYGLY G5 is our most textured grade. It uses a dobby micro waffle fabric to provide a much more pronounced surface texture than the softer grades.

It is designed for times when you deliberately want more texture rather than as a cloth that everyone needs to use every day.

What is the softest type of face cloth?

There isn't one universal answer because softness depends on the individual fabric and its construction rather than simply whether a cloth is labelled cotton, bamboo or muslin.

As a general principle, smoother fabrics and softer constructions tend to feel gentler, while more open or structured weaves create more noticeable texture.

This is why it is difficult to choose a face cloth based on material names alone.

Two cloths described as cotton can feel completely different against your face.

Are reusable face cloths better than disposable wipes?

Reusable face cloths and disposable wipes serve different purposes, but a washable face cloth has one obvious advantage: it can be used repeatedly rather than discarded after a single use.

A good quality face cloth can be washed, dried and returned to your bathroom again and again.

It also allows you to choose the texture you want rather than relying on the fixed surface of a disposable wipe.

Whatever cloth you use, regular washing is important. A face cloth should be treated as a personal care item and kept clean between uses.

Which face cloth is best for cleansing?

There is no single texture that will feel right for everyone or for every cleanse.

Some people prefer a very soft face cloth. Others enjoy the light texture of muslin. Some want considerably more texture when they are looking for an exfoliating effect.

Your preference can also change.

You might want a soft cloth for one cleanse and something more textured at another time.

That variation is the idea behind TYGLY.

Five face cloths. Five different textures.

TYGLY was created around a simple observation: if face cloths can have very different textures, why treat them as though they are all the same?

We created five grades:

G1 The Softest Touch
Bamboo cotton with the softest feel in the range.

G2 Gentle Texture
Two ply muslin with a little more grip.

G3 Everyday Balance
Cotton muslin with a balanced everyday texture.

G4 Defined and Refined
Cotton etamine with a more pronounced texture.

G5 Most Textured
Dobby micro waffle for the highest level of texture in the range.

Rather than deciding that one fabric is the “best face cloth”, you can choose the texture that feels right at the time.

Not sure which face cloth to choose?

That is exactly why we created the TYGLY Discovery Box.

It contains one cloth from each of the five grades, allowing you to feel the difference between bamboo cotton, two ply muslin, cotton muslin, textured cotton etamine and dobby micro waffle for yourself.

Start soft. Explore more texture. Find the grades that work for you.

Five grades. Five textures. Choose the right cloth at the right time.
